HISTORY
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was
God.” (John 1:1). Such is the history of Eastside Global Ministries (EGM) from the
beginning. God has orchestrated the movement of this church for 80 years. God has shown us
the beauty of His love and we have felt His presence in and through us. Though we know that
we have only just begun and that there is still a lot to be done, we are proud of our history and
where we have come.
Rev. C.A. Chandler, a minister of the PCG, moved from Mississippi, to Atlanta, Georgia,
about 1941. Around 1943, he started the church located in Cabbage Town on Gaskill Street.
Later, Rev. Smallwood became the Pastor while Rev. Chandler travelled as District
Superintendent to the Southeast District; which included Georgia, Northwest Florida, Alabama
and South Carolina.
In the early 50’s, Rev. R.O. Callaway, became pastor at Eastside Global Ministries and served for
over 20 years, but resigned as pastor due to old age and poor health. Rev. James Floyd was
then elected. He desired adding to the church building, but by then the community was
considered “historic” and no additional work could be done to expand the church. Rev. Floyd
was the pastor for approximately 15 years. After him, Chris Christmas was the Pastor for
approximately two years. After his tenure, Rev. Ed Brawner became the Pastor and was
assisted by Rev. Glenn Phillips.
In 2000, Rev. Richard L. Davis moved his ministry into the Church and it experienced
growth in various ministries. Under Rev. Davis leadership, the church had a food pantry,
reached out to those in personal care and nursing homes, and provided blessings to families
and children. In 2017, Rev. Davis asked Rev. Thomas E. Houston, to occupy the leadership
and pastoral-ship due to his failing health.
In January 2017, Rev. Houston faithfully accepted the position and was installed as
Pastor of Eastside PCG June 11, 2017. The Church under his leadership has a strong
congregation that continues to praise the Lord and serve the Atlanta Community once in the
Cabbage Town Historic District and now on the eastside and surrounding areas. Rev. Houston
is the eighth minister to lead the Eastside Global Ministries in its 80th year history. Under his leadership,
Eastside Global Ministries continues to feed and clothe those in need, provide smiles to children with Toys
for Tots, provide services to the those in personal care and nursing homes, and provide
additional blessings to families and children during the holidays. The Church's heritage is a
rewarding one and we have learned to forever give God the praises for giving us the knowledge,
wisdom and understanding of His Word and for allowing us to Celebrate 80 Years of
Existence!
Rev. Houston, our dynamic pastor continues to preach the Word of God to a great
congregation week after week at Eastside Global Ministries and continues to echo our popular theme, We
Come This Far by Faith!
5 Eras of EGM HISTORY
In 1919, a missional movement erupted with a commitment to
aggressive evangelism, church planting, and advancing the Gospel
around the world. Since then, the EGM has led the charge to move the
mission of Christ forward in five different eras, beginning in Chicago
and now continuing in Dallas-Fort Worth.
One Movement and a Global Mission
Under the message of One Mission—One Movement, the EGM realizes
its challenge to again become a global church with a global
mission. Our vision depends upon multiplying our global footprint by
training ministers, growing existing churches, and planting new
churches, all to transform cities and nations with the love of Jesus.
